Beyond the Safari: A Journey of Hope and Resilience
With Drift Plus Adventures & Kenswed
From October 10th to 12th, the dust of the Samburu roads was stirred by a different kind of safari one we at Drift Plus Adventures were incredibly proud to be part of. This wasn't just a journey in search of wildlife, but a mission in pursuit of hope, resilience, and empowerment. Partnering with the Kenswed Girl Empowerment team for their 3rd Social Impact Tour, we guided a convoy of over 40 passionate individuals from Nairobi on a three-day expedition that left an indelible mark on the community, the participants, and on us.
Our home for this adventure was the scenic Elephant Lodge, where we camped under the vast, starry African sky, a constant reminder of the expansive work we were there to support.
Day 1: A Warm Welcome and Eye Opening Realities
The journey north was filled with laughter, song, and budding camaraderie. We arrived in Samburu to a heartfelt welcome from Samwel Leadismo of the Pastoralist Child Foundation. He immediately grounded our mission in reality, providing a crucial briefing on the multi-faceted challenges facing the pastoralist child.
While we were aware of the scourges of FGM and forced early marriages, Samuel highlighted a critical, often overlooked adversary: harsh climatic conditions. Drought and climate change are dwindling resources, directly impacting a child's ability to access and remain in education. It was a powerful reminder that empowerment must address a web of interconnected issues.
Our second day continued with a truly humbling encounter with Elizabeth Lemoyog, affectionately known as 'Mama Yao'. A survivor of FGM herself, Elizabeth has taken her pain and transformed it into a powerful force for change. With breathtaking courage, she demonstrated the different types of FGM, a session that left us all shocked and deeply moved.
Her message was clear: this is not just a Samburu issue. The practice cuts across communities like the Somalis, Akambas, Maasai, and even exists in some European communities. Her bravery in educating others is a beacon of hope, proving that the cycle can be broken.
Our next stop was the inspiring Nanap Lturur Women Group. These women are the very definition of resilience. In her address, Patricia Mutiso, as she welcomed the Director of Kenswed, said it was amazing to see women rising and coming together to empower each other and bold enough for standing against FGM. This spirit was palpable. By merging nine smaller sub-groups, they have built an impressive accommodation facility for visitors, complete with water, electricity, and breathtaking Samburu views.
But their ambition doesn't stop there. The proceeds from their guest rooms are funding the construction of a school and other community projects. We were thrilled to find them receiving training on beekeeping from Patrick of INTERNATIONAL TREASURE HOUSE MINISTRIES INC, a skill that promises sustainable income.
We spent the evening interacting, sharing stories, and drawing inspiration from their incredible strength.
Moments of Connection
Day 2: Education, Health, and the Power of a Voice
After lunch hour break day two took us to the Llpus Leluai Comprehensive School, where the focus was on nurturing the mind and body.
Dr. Damaris from the Kenswed Dental Clinic took to the stage, passionately emphasizing the importance of oral health. Her talk was followed by a practical donation of toothpaste and toothbrushes from Colgate and Pepsodent.
Next, Sylvia Mugure, a Counseling Psychologist from Kenswed High School, captivated the students with a session on the importance of being bold and speaking out. In a culture where silence is often expected, her message was a powerful catalyst for self-advocacy and confidence.
The day was anchored by Director Isaac Macharia of Kenswed Organization, who took a moment to thank the entire team for their commitment. He emphasized the profound impact that comes from people uniting with a common purpose to give back to society.
A pivotal moment came when Mr. Harryson Makamu, Principal of Kenswed High School, took the stage. He spoke powerfully about the deep-rooted partnership between the community and Kenswed, highlighting that several students from the community are fully sponsored at Kenswed High School and the Kenswed Technical and Vocational Training College. To drive the point home, he invited alumni from the community to the stage living proof of the program's success.
Mr. Makamu then shared an exciting vision for the future: plans are underway to establish a Kenswed M-School hub right in the community. This innovative initiative uses tablet devices pre-loaded with over 40 course videos, bringing quality education directly to the people. Furthermore, he reminded everyone that through the Kenswed Startup Acceleration Fund (STAP), the organization funds alumni businesses with up to 1.5 Million Ksh, ensuring their education translates into tangible entrepreneurship. He wholeheartedly welcomed the Social Impact Tour, insisting that "knowledge is a mega impact to the community."
A beautiful moment of pure joy was captured in a picture of Ann Naserian (Kenswed Girl Empowerment Program Head) and Bill Mogaka of Kenswed Organization. Their radiant smiles are a testament to a vision moving from ideation to actualization. This is what success looks like the happiness that comes from tangible, community-driven impact.
A key tool in this empowerment is education. We distributed copies of the powerful book, "My Voice Counts". Seeing participant Irene Mwenze immersed in its pages with the students was a poignant scene. As Irene reflected, "I was deeply immersed in the wittily crafted words of this amazing author who made it her job to create awareness of the negative effects of FGM and child marriages, common practices in some pastoral communities in Kenya."
To support the girls' health and dignity, we also distributed sanitary towels, a simple yet critical contribution to keeping them in school.
Day 3: Reflection, Recreation, and Farewell
Our final morning was one of reflection. We looked back on the connections made, the lessons learned, and the incredible resilience we witnessed.
As a fitting end to our transformative journey, we embarked on a game drive through the stunning Samburu National Reserve. Surrounded by the majestic beauty of Kenya's wildlife, we had a moment to process the profound experience, bonding as a team one last time.
